What does the SSBMS do and how does it work?

How the SSBMS Works

The Stoked Stock BMS (SSBMS) is a charge-only battery management system with built-in Bluetooth connectivity to the Indy Speed Control app. It provides individual cell-group monitoring, overcharge protection, and passive balancing while letting you view your battery’s condition and adjust settings from your phone.

What “charge-only” means

The SSBMS controls the charging path and can stop charging to protect against cell overvoltage. It cannot interrupt the battery’s main discharge connection while you ride.

That distinction matters: a charge-only BMS does not provide a discharge cutoff for low voltage, excessive motor current, or a short circuit in the main discharge path. Your controller’s settings and the battery’s separate protective hardware handle those functions. Automatic storage mode protects against continued BMS power consumption; it does not stop your controller from draining the battery.

How balancing works

The SSBMS uses the user-adjustable “Balance Start” setting as a voltage threshold. Each cell group above that threshold is slowly discharged through a bleed resistor until its voltage falls below the threshold.

  • Some cell groups above the threshold: Those groups bleed down while the lower groups do not, helping bring their voltages closer together.

  • All cell groups above the threshold: All groups bleed simultaneously. This does not selectively balance the higher groups against the lower ones while every group remains above the threshold.

  • No cell groups above the threshold: No bleeding occurs—even if the groups have different voltages.

For example, with Balance Start set to 4.10 V, a group at 4.15 V will bleed down, while a group at 4.05 V will not.

The SSBMS can continue balancing after the charger is disconnected. Balancing stops when the all cells fall below the balance start threshold or the BMS is placed into storage mode.

Bluetooth and storage mode

Bluetooth uses a small amount of battery power while the BMS is awake. For extended storage, use storage mode to disable Bluetooth and stop balancing.

To wake the BMS again, simply connect a charger.

If the BMS is left awake for an extended period, it automatically enters storage mode when the cell-voltage threshold reaches 2.7 V, reducing further drain from the BMS. This is a backup protection—not a recommended storage voltage or a guarantee against every cause of battery discharge. Use storage mode before putting the battery away, and check its charge periodically.
